The Basingstoke Canal Authority

Until 1990 each County Council (Hampshire CC and Surrey CC) managed that part of the canal in its area. It was then decided that one central body would better serve the administration of the canal, and so the Basingstoke Canal Authority was set up, and funded by both Counties. The BCA is based at the Canal Visitor Centre at Mytchett.

The Canal Director reports to the Joint Management Committee (JMC) which is composed of Councillors from the two County Councils and six District Councils.

As the managing body for the canal, the BCA's remit is to develop the canal as a recreational and leisure amenity whilst recognising its position as a waterway of outstanding natural history importance. One of the special attractions of the waterway is that it caters for a wide variety of interests. This requires careful management to ensure that the various complementary but potentially conflicting activities can operate harmoniously.

Grateful acknowledgement is made for the financial support of Hampshire and Surrey County Councils and the District and Borough Councils of Guildford, Hart, Runnymede, Rushmoor, Surrey Heath and Woking. Additional grant funds provided by English Nature. A special mention for the continuing voluntary support provided by the Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society.

The Basingstoke Canal Visitors Centre was opened in May 1993 and has a variety of facilities for visitors including an information point, canal exhibition, adventure playground, souvenir gift shop, tea room and picnic areas. It is also the departure point for the 12-seat trip boats.

During 2003 the BCA at last set up its own website at :-

where all the latest news etc should be available.
