Today, BC News is the quarterly 16-page magazine of the canal society. Each issue contains news as well as other information and illustrated articles about the Canal and the Society. These early issues were called the "Newsletter".
The first issue, dated January 1967, appeared shortly after the Canal Society was formed. It had no pictures nor a masthead, and consisted of two single sheets of duplicated 'foolscap' size paper. Succeeding issues appeared about every two months. By issue no. 10 (February 1968) it had enlarged to three sides, and by no. 16 (October 1968) to six sides and with a masthead. With no. 49 (Mar-April 1973) it appeared on the new A4 size of paper.
Issue no. 112 (December 1983) was the last to use duplicated sheets for the text; no. 114 March 1984, (there was no 113 ....) was the first to have the text printed, though full folded magazine pages did not happen until no. 130 in November 1986 (incorrectly issued as October ...).
Photographs first appeared in issue no. 54 (Jan-Feb 1974) and consisted of a double-sided sheet on the front of the textpages.
These early issues are now being put online. They give a fascinating account of the Society's early campaign, struggles and setbacks to get the canal purchased as a public amenity. Later issues recount the Society's work in restoring the derelict canal, a work celebrated by the Royal Re-opening of May 1991 by H.M. the Duke of Kent.
Most of the previous issues are now online (see below and on left).
More will be added from time to time - keep looking!
