Baseley's Bridge

After about 270 yards from Stacey's Bridge, another red-brick arch bridge is reached. This was built, like the others, when the canal was cut in the 18th century.

Dating from around 1792, it was restored in 1975 and now has two pairs of circular pattress plates tying the spandrel walls together.

 Baseley's Bridge
"Baseley", from whom this bridge gets its name, was the Vicar of the Estate church on the Mildmay estate at the time of the canal's construction.

The church, which is on the north side of the canal, is now Winchfield Parish Church, and there is a footpath from the bridge to the church.

There is a crack in the 'upstream' parapet which appears to have been partially filled at some time.

Some damage on the underside of the bridge arch indicates there may have been a possible boat collision?

The dense woods here provide seclusion and shelter but hardly any views of the surrounding countryside.

Going onwards, it is nearly half a mile before the next bridge, Sprat's Hatch, is reached.
