Trees along the Canal near Winchfield

Our beautiful canal in blessed with an abundance of fine trees.  Something like 40,000 apparently. Unfortunately, as illustrated last winter, they can fall, be dangerous and block the navigation. Even the healthy ones need constant attention and this is where things get complicated. Just who is responsible for the management and care of our trees?

Fiona Shipp, Canal Manager, and Jon Green, Senior Ranger, have bravely agreed to put together all the fascinating facts and figures to present to you a clear picture of just who and what is involved. Their presentation will take us through the layers of involved parties and agencies and the policies created by them and on to various topics including;

  • County Council policies,
  • The role of Natural England,
  • The involvement of other interested parties,
  • BCA land ownership and private land owners and their responsibilities,
  • A review of achievements and future aims,
  • Issues affecting our trees,
  • Dealing with hazardous trees,
  • Identifying canal banks with serious tree threats.
  • Latest survey results and their implications,
  • Responding to incident reports,
  • Day to day workload,
  • Contracting out work, and much, much more.

At the end we all should have a very clear understanding of the situation and there will be plenty of time for a Q & A session if there is anything you personally would like to clarify.

As if all of the above was not enough there will even be free tea, coffee and biscuits. I’m also sure alcohol will be consumed in Potters afterwards. How can you refuse!

The presentation of this interesting and illuminating evening will require a lot of preparation from Fiona and Jon, two very busy people. I would really like to show our appreciation by seeing as many Lengthsmen there as possible, however the evening is open to all those interested in the running of the Canal.

Could I please ask you to r.s.v.p. to me, Mike Gordon, within the next few days to help with arrangements (if you have not already).

Perhaps if you have a particular question you would like answered, email it to me in advance and I’ll make sure it gets included.

We don’t get together that often and it would be nice to meet up again so hope to see you there.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

Mike
Senior Lengthsman
