Head of Aircraft Structures Dept at the RAE

  Percy Walker (12K)

Percy Walker spent the whole of his life on aircraft and aircraft design, most of it at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. A Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Chartered Engineer, he went from Cambridge to join the design team of the airship R101 at Cardington, was awarded a Ph.D for his work on the Wagner theory of fluid motion, and spent five years in the aircraft industry.

He joined the Airworthiness Department at Farnborough before World War II, spent the war years at the Ministry of Aircraft production, and returned after the war to the RAE as head of the Aircraft Structures Department.

He wrote several books on early aviation, in 1958 he was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, and in 1964 the distinguished Service Award of the Flight Safety Foundation, notably for his part in investigating the Comet crashes and his experiments into cabin-pressure fatigue. On his retirement he held the post of Special Consultant to the Director of the RAE.
