Restoration

Working Parties

Right from the beginning of the restoration project, volunteer working parties organised by the Canal Society did almost all of the necessary work on the derelict canal.

With the completion of the restoration and the re-opening of the canal in 1991, together with the formation of the Canal Authority, Society volunteer working parties have worked in conjunction with the Authority in helping to maintain and improve the canal.

Working parties are organised for most weekends throughout the year.

  Summer Canal Camps

Additionally, during the latter part of the restoration period, and in succeeding years, week-long canal camps have been held. These are under the auspices of the Waterway Recovery Group (WRG), and have enabled projects to be completed much faster than is possible with weekend parties.

The current major project is the back-pumping scheme at Woodham, and so the two canal camps held in 2000 concentrated on this.
